Starts at Home day 2019
Advance are proud to support 'Starts at Home' day. This important annual campaign shines a spotlight on the vital difference supported housing makes to thousands of people every day and is organised by the National Housing Federation.
We have shown our support on social media and by continuing to share positive stories from our services across the country. This year more than ever it is important that the positive impact of supported housing is understood.
Funding remains a challenge. In 2009, the ring-fence on support funding – called ‘Supporting People’ – was removed, and since then there have been severe cuts in the amount of money local authorities spend on support. Some local authorities have cut their support funding altogether, to focus on statutory services such as social care. Spending by councils on housing-related support services has reduced by 69% between 2010 and 2017, taking billions out of the sector. Despite this, supported housing saves the public purse around £940 per resident per year.
We support the NHF ask of Government to address these challenges by:
- Investing in the support people need to thrive
- Investing in supported housing and a fairer welfare system
- Ring-fencing housing-related support and restoring funding to 2010 levels.
