Learning Disability Awareness Week 2018
Advance has an important role to play in supporting our customers so they register for annual health checks, keep active and involved in their local community and take part in hobbies, volunteering and other activities that interest them.
This week we are getting involved in Mencap's Learning Disability Week 2018. They want to spread the word about the problems people with a learning disability can face in getting good healthcare in hospital, and how we can change this. Mencap are encouraging people with a learning disability and NHS staff to work together to improve care that isn't good enough.
Mencap research shows that commonly associated health conditions experienced by people with a learning disability are:
- being underweight or overweight
- dementia
- epilepsy
- respiratory disease
Every person with a learning disability has the right to an annual health check. Quite often, people with a learning disability have a health need that isn’t met or detected - annual health checks help to spot early warnings for new conditions and monitor existing conditions.
In this short video clip one of our customers Theresa tells us about the importance of having an annual health check.
