BHM 2022: Jeffrey's Story
Key to Black History Month this October, is that we celebrate the amazing contributions the black community has made to the UK today including black culture, cuisine and heritage.
Yesterday, we visited Leicester Customer Jeffrey* with Housing Officer, Lindsey. Advance has recently supported Jeffrey to move into his own home after living in institutions for 22 years.
Jeffrey is originally from Montserrat and explained how he misses the vibrant Caribbean colours, delicious food and chilled back way of life.
As he settles back into independent living, staff at Advance have been helping him to explore his local area. One place in particular Jeffrey has enjoyed visiting is the local African Caribbean Centre which has its own café serving Caribbean food. Although he hasn’t been able to visit his home and Mum for over 20 years, he said he was looking forward to visiting there again and keeping in touch with his roots.
Whilst we were talking, he also found out more about the events Leicester City Council is putting on to celebrate Black History Month including saxophone performances and black community theatre productions. Jeffrey said he would definitely take a look.
