LGBTQ+ History Month

KayleighIn recognition of LGBT+ History Month, we’ve speaking to Advance customers and colleagues to hear about their experiences and why the month is important to them.

Kayleigh has been an Advance customer since 2018 and lives in Canvey. Kayleigh spoke to us about why she thinks LGBT+ History Month is significant and why she’s proud to be part of the LGBT+ community.

Tell me why LGBT+ History Month is important to you

LGBT+ History Month is important to me because, as a pansexual woman, it helps me feel seen and included. For so long, many LGBT+ identities were overlooked or misunderstood, so having a dedicated time to celebrate our history and contributions reminds me that people like me have always existed and have always mattered.

It gives me the confidence to be my authentic self without feeling like I need to hide who I am. Seeing representation and hearing stories from others in the community reinforces that my identity is valid and worthy of respect.

LGBT+ History Month isn’t just about the past, it’s about creating a present where people feel safe, accepted and proud of who they are. For me, it’s a reminder that I belong.

Why do you think we should celebrate LGBT+ History Month?

I think we should celebrate LGBT+ History Month because it gives people like me the chance to feel recognised and valued. For a long time, LGBT+ voices and stories weren’t included in what we learn about history, which can make it feel like our identities don’t matter. Celebrating this month helps change that.

It’s important because it creates visibility and understanding. When people learn about the history, struggles, and achievements of the LGBT+ community, it builds empathy and helps break down stereotypes. That kind of awareness makes a real difference in creating safer and more inclusive spaces.

On a personal level, it reminds me that being part of the LGBT+ community is something to be proud of. It shows that we have always existed, always contributed and always deserved respect. That’s why celebrating LGBT+ History Month matters.

What are some ways that help you feel included and valued in your community?

I feel included and valued when I can be completely myself without feeling the need to hide who I am. As a member of the LGBT community, it means a lot when my identity is acknowledged and respected without assumptions or judgement.

Open supportive conversations and inclusive language make a big difference. Small actions that show understanding and acceptance help me feel safe and supported.

Most importantly, I feel valued when my identity is treated as something normal and accepted - that’s when I truly feel like I belong.

What does acceptance and inclusivity look like to you?

Acceptance and inclusivity to me mean being able to be my true self, feeling seen, respected, and safe without having to hide who I am. It means important conversations with those who listen, it’s having a safe space but also being able to be a safe place for others, it’s knowing and letting people know that no matter who they love or whatever they are is okay. It’s speaking up when it matters

What do you think are some good ways to celebrate LGBT+ History Month

I think good ways to celebrate LGBT+ History Month are by sharing and learning stories of the community, having conversations and joining events like workshops, parties, crafts, or parades. It’s about visibility, inclusion and making everyone feel seen, valued and connected.
