Marieny's story

Maireny struggled to find work when she came with her family came to England three years ago. Seeking better opportunities for their daughters, Maireny and her husband arrived and began looking for jobs, yet her poor English skills and disability meant Maireny couldn’t find steady employment. Her Spanish qualifications from home meant nothing to employers as she struggled to grasp a new language.

Maireny came to Advance looking to improve her skills and find employment. She soon found that working with Advance was far better than going to the job centre every week, “I had a team of people helping me to improve”, she reflects. After an initial assessment from Advance staff, Maireny was referred to different classes and sessions that helped target the areas she needed to improve. She received help with her IT skills and interview techniques, benefiting from the focus that Advance gave her in her job hunt.

Maireny was soon placed onto one of Advance’s internal traineeships, one of our 6 month contracts that give our customers a chance to work for us and develop their experience and CV. In order to build on skills from her previous job in Spain, Maireny was hired as a receptionist in our Solihull office.

“When Advance gave me this opportunity, everything changed”, she now says. Maireny loved her job at Advance, throwing herself into any task that came her way, keeping herself very busy!
